Rising Star Winner
Black, deadly and willing to take her message to the Australian Parliament, Rachael is a Warlpiri woman who wants to smash stereotypes about her mob through media. After addressing parliament in 2017 about the importance of a national broadcaster presenting black voices, where she introduced herself in the language of her grandmother, she went on that year to participate in Al Jazeera’s Earthrise program.
On her secondment with the global broadcaster, she took an accomplished journalist and cameraman into the desert country of WA, documenting a group of rangers healing colonial scars on the land and bringing the story of Indigenous resilience to the world.
Now co-hosting a weekly hour-long current affairs show on black issues in Australia on top of her journalistic responsibilities for NITV, Rachael continues to be a voice advocating for domestic violence solutions among Indigenous Australians, black feminism, land rights and mental health of Indigenous youth.
